Exploring the medical applications of 3D printing with 3D LifePrints has been an incredible experience for the staff and patients of Alder Hey children’s hospital. With 3DLP’s embedded 3D printing facility we have discovered a number of truly novel and exciting ways to make our care better, kinder and easier. Working with 3DLP has been an absolute pleasure. Their attention to detail and innovative team have opened our eyes to a huge range of possibilities.
The models can be designed to a specific criteria. No two children, or conditions are the same, so a 3D model of a patient's problem can only benefit the training, and ultimately the care they receive.
Just to say a huge thank you for making the 3D model. It's even better than expected and will make planning the case much easier

3D printing could reduce a lot of challenges we have with training. It is obviously beneficial for the patient, obviously beneficial for the clinician and obviously beneficial for our health systems in terms of reducing costs and reducing complications.
3D printing offers some really unique and exciting opportunities to change the way that we teach, plan and undertake surgical interventions in orthopaedics. 3D LifePrints are leading the way. Working with 3D LifePrints we have produced high resolution 3D prints of the heart of unprecedented quality and detail, generated from high resolution micro-CT data sets, such prints have brought our virtual data to life, and serve to improved our understanding of the 3D micro-anatomy of the heart.
The Virtual Engineering Centre is developing an exciting collaboration with 3D LifePrints, bringing together the specialist expertise of both organisations in 3D printing and immersive virtual reality to support the medical sector.Co-developing new processes to support surgeons at Alder Hey Children’s Trust with 3D LifePrints has accelerated the development of new techniques and has highlighted the benefits to medical teams, patients and their families, that can be achieved by innovatively combining 3D printing, scanning and immersive virtual reality technologies.
I think the reproduction is excellent and will benefit the patient from from both the clinical perspective, and the families understanding of the nature of her pathology. I used the 3D reconstruction to help the family understand exactly the nature of the deformity. At the end of the consultation the patient's mother admitted that it was the first time she really understood understood the complexity of the deformity"
The model went down well this morning, changed the operation. Patient will almost certainly do better as a result of it, both short term and long term.
Invaluable. Really good for guiding my operation and certainly with this patient I would have struggled to work out what to do rather than knowing beforehand. The 3D model was excellent for explaining to the patients as well. Staff in theatre liked them as they could understand what I was doing and what I needed. Using pre-operative 3D models should be the standard of care for Septal patients.
The use of the 3D model in liver surgery consents to clarify several useful pre-operative aspects. The accuracy of the model in terms of anatomical findings was high. In case of complex vascular reconstruction strategies, a rational use of 3D printing technology should be implemented.
You’ll be pleased to know that the model that you made for us performed very well during the initial usability trials we conducted, and was well received by the ten eminent urological surgeons, from across Europe, who participated.
I have only positive memories of working with the team there and look forward to working with you again, as and when the opportunity arises.
The response from clinicians using the models has been fantastic; they see a range of benefits both to their own practice and to the patients and families who gain a much better understanding of their medical condition.
Seeing the lab and chatting with the biomedical engineer stimulated a new plan for a complex patient and I'm going to ask them to sort some new models for me.
The model was very useful. It allowed the patient to see how abnormal her hip really is. A superb tool to help counsel patients. More time planning results in more rehearsal, repetition, which must lead to better outcomes. Very useful in pre-op counselling and patient education.
I found it useful, not only for pre-operative planning but also to understand and identify trochlea dysplasia patterns.
Virtual surgery is a positive initiative and has spurred ideas for improving the model and subsequent impingement cases.
At the end of the day, the more you practice the better a surgeon you become. Being able to use 3D printed models that mimic tissues from bone to vessels provides us with an incredible opportunity to create high fidelity simulation models.
3D printing has a marvelous ability to improve clinical discussion within a large multidisciplinary team with different skill sets. This directly benefits patient care and enhances medical education in congenital heart disease. We are very excited with our recent partnership with 3D LifePrints experienced team that is helping us to level up our performance.
